Fuel Prices Expected to Drop in June: Relief for South African Motorists
Motorists in South Africa might see some respite at the pumps in June, as early data suggests a possible decrease in both petrol and diesel prices.
According to the Central Energy Fund (CEF), data for the first week of May indicates an over-recovery in both petrol and diesel prices. Petrol prices show an over-recovery of 34 cents per litre, while diesel is showing a larger over-recovery of between 68 and 73 cents per litre.
This potential decrease would mark a significant turnaround for petrol prices, which have been on the rise for the first four months of 2024. Starting with a 76 cents per litre cut in January, petrol prices have seen a combined increase of R3.00 per litre from February to May, with a net increase of R2.24 since the start of the year. Diesel prices, on the other hand, have only seen a net increase of 12 cents per litre this year.
These positive signs are attributed to a stronger rand relative to April and a lower global oil price, which has dropped below $83 a barrel. Oil prices have been declining since early April, with losses in three of the past four weeks.
While these early indicators are positive, final price adjustments depend on various factors, including the rand’s strength, global oil prices, and geopolitical tensions. However, if current trends continue, South African motorists could see a welcome drop in fuel prices in June.

Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa recently announced that Eskom has achieved an Energy Availability Factor (EAF) of over 65%. Despite this milestone, long-term challenges continue to loom, and load shedding remains a possibility.
Key Points:
- The EAF is a critical metric for Eskom, directly impacting the likelihood of load shedding. When the EAF decreases, available power also declines, often leading to load shedding.
- Eskom has faced declining EAFs due to maintenance issues and equipment breakdowns. However, recent efforts have seen an increase in the EAF, resulting in a load-shedding-free April.
- Minister Ramokgopa hailed the achievement of a 65.5% EAF, highlighting it as a validation of Eskom’s fleet and a step towards ending load shedding.
- Recent improvements include the return of Medupi Unit 4, Koeberg Unit 2, and the synchronization of Kusile Unit 6, adding 2,580 MW to the grid over six months.
Outlook:
- While Eskom’s recent achievements are promising, load shedding remains a possibility, especially with the higher electricity demand expected during winter.
- Eskom has implemented temporary solutions, such as bypassing the flue-gas desulphurization plant, but long-term solutions are needed.
- Minister Ramokgopa and experts caution that challenges persist, and Eskom must address its reliability issues to avoid future load shedding.
Conclusion:
While Eskom’s recent improvements are commendable, long-term solutions are crucial to prevent future load shedding. The government’s efforts to boost solar energy and Eskom’s ongoing maintenance are steps in the right direction, but sustained efforts are needed to ensure a reliable power supply for South Africa.

Fueling Excellence: The Gold Standard in Fuel Quality and Reliability
In today’s ever-evolving fuel landscape, quality and reliability are paramount. At Virgin Fuels, we take pride in adhering to the highest industry certifications and standards to ensure our customers receive only the best. Let’s delve into the world of fuel quality certifications and standards to understand their significance.
One of the most recognized certifications is the ISO 9001, which ensures that our processes meet the highest standards of quality management. Additionally, the ISO 14001 certification highlights our commitment to environmental management, ensuring that our operations are as eco-friendly as possible.
Another important certification is the ASTM International standards, which provide guidelines for fuel quality and performance. These standards cover a wide range of aspects, including fuel composition, stability, and combustion characteristics.
By adhering to these certifications and standards, Virgin Fuels ensures that our customers receive fuel that is not only reliable but also meets the highest quality benchmarks. We are committed to providing fuel that keeps your engines running smoothly while minimizing environmental impact.
Shell’s Farewell: Fuelling a New Era in South Africa’s Fuel Landscape
Shell Plc’s decision to divest from South Africa marks a significant shift in the country’s energy landscape. With plans to sell its downstream assets, including over 500 service stations, Shell aims to reshape its portfolio in line with its focus on performance, discipline, and simplification.
This move follows a comprehensive review of its Downstream and Renewables businesses worldwide. Shell’s decision to exit South Africa confirms earlier reports and aligns with its strategy to divest from 1,000 service stations globally by 2025 to focus on electric vehicle charging options.
The divestment will not only impact Shell’s longstanding presence in South Africa, dating back 120 years but also reflects broader challenges facing the country as an investment destination. The move underscores the evolving nature of the energy sector and Shell’s commitment to adapting to meet changing market demands

Revving Up Performance: The Impact of Fuel Additives on Engine Performance
Fuel additives have long been used to enhance the quality of fuels, offering benefits that can significantly improve engine performance. As a leading bulk fuel supplier, Virgin Fuels is committed to delivering high-quality fuel solutions that meet the evolving needs of our customers. Here’s a closer look at how fuel additives can positively impact engine performance:
Improved Fuel Efficiency
Additives such as detergents and dispersants help keep fuel injectors and valves clean, ensuring optimal fuel flow and combustion efficiency. This can lead to improved fuel economy and reduced emissions.
Emissions Reduction
Additives that improve combustion efficiency can lead to lower emissions of harmful pollutants, helping to meet environmental regulations and reduce the carbon footprint of your operations.
Enhanced Engine Protection
Certain additives, such as lubricity agents and corrosion inhibitors, help protect engine components from wear and tear, extending the life of the engine and reducing maintenance costs.
Cold-Weather Performance
Some additives are formulated to improve fuel flow and prevent gelling in cold temperatures, ensuring reliable engine performance in harsh weather conditions.
