Fuel Prices Expected to Drop in June: Relief for South African Motorists
Motorists in South Africa might see some respite at the pumps in June, as early data suggests a possible decrease in both petrol and diesel prices.
According to the Central Energy Fund (CEF), data for the first week of May indicates an over-recovery in both petrol and diesel prices. Petrol prices show an over-recovery of 34 cents per litre, while diesel is showing a larger over-recovery of between 68 and 73 cents per litre.
This potential decrease would mark a significant turnaround for petrol prices, which have been on the rise for the first four months of 2024. Starting with a 76 cents per litre cut in January, petrol prices have seen a combined increase of R3.00 per litre from February to May, with a net increase of R2.24 since the start of the year. Diesel prices, on the other hand, have only seen a net increase of 12 cents per litre this year.
These positive signs are attributed to a stronger rand relative to April and a lower global oil price, which has dropped below $83 a barrel. Oil prices have been declining since early April, with losses in three of the past four weeks.
While these early indicators are positive, final price adjustments depend on various factors, including the rand’s strength, global oil prices, and geopolitical tensions. However, if current trends continue, South African motorists could see a welcome drop in fuel prices in June.
Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa recently announced that Eskom has achieved an Energy Availability Factor (EAF) of over 65%. Despite this milestone, long-term challenges continue to loom, and load shedding remains a possibility.
